Day 1 :
Collect your rental car in Johannesburg OR Durban, and drive to the northern Drakensberg. Driving times: approximately 4 hours from Johannesburg, approximately 3 hours from Durban. Check in at your cosy family-run hotel set amidst spectacular mountain scenery.
Dinner and overnight: Cavern Berg Resort. (D)
Day 2 - 4 :
This hotel offers guests daily guided hikes to such wonderful destinations as Thonsela Cave, Cannibal Cavern, Echo Cave and Sungubala amongst others. Choose between a short or a longer walk each day. All guided walks visit places of beauty and historic interest.
Lone Rock, with its exquisite bushmen’s paintings, is just one of many. Another popular activity is the Breakfast Walk, ending off with a scrumptious breakfast, overlooking the picturesque valley below.
The Cavern is a child-friendly family resort. During the day children are kept busy on the trampoline and jungle gym and there are pony rides twice a day. Canoes are available for hire on the dam and they can try to fish. There is a small separate children’s pool and an exciting slide into the large pool. Families usually join the morning guided hikes and the shorter walks are not too strenuous. Packed lunches can be ordered for those who'd like a family picnic in the mountains.
Horse riders of all abilities will find suitable horse amongst the more than 20 horses. Each day grooms lead rides through splendid scenery.
Nearby, a centre devoted to outdoor activities and adventures (for older children) offer many optional programmes.
