Desert Magic (4 days)

Day 1 :
Collect your rental car in Windhoek, and travel via the Gamsberg Pass, with the magnificent views towards Gamsberg, often called "Namibia's Table Mountain". Travel via Sossusvlei and arrive at your lodge.
Overnight: Namib Desert Lodge (or similar). (D)

Day 2 & 3 :
Spend two days in the Sesriem and Sossusvlei area. Your lodge will have optional excursions to Sossusvlei which can be booked on site. You cannot enter Sossusvlei in a regular car due to the soft sand. Sesriem gets it's name from early pioneers, who wanted to get water from the canyon. They had to tie six leather thongs to the handle of their buckets, in order to draw water from pools that were inaccessible to their livestock. These thongs were called 'leer riems' in Afrikaans, 'ses' being six in the same language. The area soon became known as 'Ses Rieme' or Sesriem.
The sand dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert are often referred to as the highest dunes in the world. Various arguments are laid out to support this claim, but all miss the point, which is that Sossusvlei is surely one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia. Located in the Namib Naukluft Park, the largest conservation area in Africa, and fourth largest in the world - the sand dunes at Sossusvlei are very impressive! Sossusvlei means 'the gathering place of water' in the local Nama language.
Seasonal rains from the Naukluft and Tsaris Mountains that succeeded in reaching the vlei, create temporary lakes that reflected the sand dunes surrounding them.
The high, red sand dunes which surround Sossusvlei form part of the sand sea, which stretches from just north of Luderitz to the Kuiseb River. Some of these dunes reach as high as 220m. Vegetation, such as the camelthorn tree is watered by occasional floods of the Tsauchab River, which slowly soak into the underlying clay. Sossusvlei is one of 4 clay pans in the area, the others being The Dead Vlei, Hidden Vlei and Nara Vlei.
The best time to view Sossusvlei is close to sunrise and sunset; the colours are strong and constantly changing, allowing for wonderful photographic opportunities. The midday heat is intense and best spent in the shade while sunset also offers excellent photo opportunities at Sossusvlei.
